wheel build #4

This past weekend I was able to get the spokes and nipples I needed to build up the new back wheel for my cruiser.

A while back I bought a used odyssey hazard casette from a guy on bikeguide.org. And just before that, I traded my old front wheel for a set of rims and tires for a 24” bike.

Now none of this was 100% necessary, but the gearing on the cruiser was way off. After only a couple of cranks I would be at my top speed (on flat anyway). This made is slow and not a lot of fun. Here is where the casette hub came into play, it uses a smaller cog/sprocket, allowing me to go faster. Come on, who doesn’t want to go fast?!

Anyway, I was able to get the wheel built and true in about 45 minutes. That is way faster compared to the first wheel which took me all damn night to do!

I rode the bike into work and everything felt great. Since Shauna has started doing her compressed work weeks she has Wednesdays off, so I came home for lunch and on my way….psssssssss. I got a bloody flat tire, just a few blocks from work (aka, 1.5 miles from home). Shit. Turns out that after riding the wheel, some spokes were still pretty loose and I think one managed to pop the tube when I landed off a jump.

All is well, now. Except that I need to get out and take some pictures!!!!
